Originally named Sac pour l’auto (bag for automobiles), the ***Bolide*** bag is a symbol of Hermès’ responsiveness to the changing needs of customers. It appeared at the same time as the motor car and is one of the first travel bags that Émile Hermès fitted with a zip fastening, which was easy to use and expressed the motorist’s desire for speed. Combining basketwork with leather in spring 2016, ***Bolide Picnic*** pays tribute to the traditional baskets associated with countryside jaunts and requires exceptional know-how.

تمثّل حقيبة Bolide المعروفة أصلاً باسم Sac pour l’auto (حقيبة السيارات) استجابة Hermès لاحتياجات عملائها المتغيّرة. فقد تزامن ظهور هذه الحقيبة مع ظهور السيارات، وتُعد من أولى حقائب السفر التي اعتمدَ Émile Hermès في تصميمها السحّاب الذي يتيح سهولة الاستخدام ويراعي حسّ السّرعة الذي ينشده السائق. وتستعيد *Bolide Picnic* من مجموعة فصل الربيع 2016  فنّ حياكة السلال والجلد، وتعيد إلى الأذهان السلال التقليديّة المُستخدمة في الرحلات الريفيّة، وتتميّز بالدراية الفائقة في إبداعها.

Among the accessories that were indispensable to its customers, in the 1920s and 1930s, Hermès offered various models of walking stick-seats for hunting, hiking and horse racing. The thick leather of the seat ensures a comfortable perch. The aluminium foot and frame – telescopic and removable – guarantee the lightness necessary for its portable function. The graphic quality of this photograph highlights the modernity of the object.

قدّمت Hermès في عشرينيات وثلاثينيات القرن الماضي جملةً من الأغراض التي لم يستغنِ العملاء عنها، ومنها عدد من نماذج عصي المشي التي تضمّ مقعدًا وتُستخدم في الصيد، والمشي، وسباقات الخيول. وتضمن طبقة الجلد السميكة وضعيّة جلوس مريحة؛ أمّا الساق والإطار المتداخلان، فهما مصنوعان من الألومينيوم وقابلان للرفع ليضمنا خفّة وزن الغرض، وهي سمة ضروريّة ليكون قابلاً للحمل. ويُظهر وضوح  الصورة حداثة الغرض.

Created in 1956, this surprising pipe, with its swivelling cover pierced with six holes, enables its user to smoke without being troubled by the wind or sea spray. A practical accessory for seafarers, the ***Hurricane*** is impressive above all for its originality which, by combining a true quest for functionality and an astonishing appearance, seems to illustrate an offbeat universe worthy of the Belgian surrealist artist Magritte. Is this really a pipe?

ابتُدع هذا الغليون الغريب في العام 1956، ويمتاز بغطاء رأس دوّار فيه ثقوب ستّة تسمح لمستخدمه بالتدخين من دون التأثّر بالرياح أو برذاذ مياه البحر. يشكّل غليون *Hurricane* إبداعًا عمليًّا لهواة الإبحار، ويمتاز بطابعه الفريد القائم على فعاليّته، وعلى مظهره المذهل، فيرسم ملامح عالم خارج عن المألوف يشبه إبداعات الفنان السوريالي البلجيكي Magritte. فنتساءل، هل ما نشاهده فعلاً غليون؟

Harnessed to one or two goats, this child’s carriage is a perfect miniature of a sociable carriage whose passenger compartment contains two seats. It is said to have been used by Baron Maurice de Rothschild as a child for outings in town or in the countryside. With its black body, its red chassis and wheels with iron tyres and its immaculate leather parts (compass hood, upholstered seats and bumpers), it perfectly illustrates the combined expertise of the saddler-harnessmaker and the coachbuilder.

عربة تجرّها معزاة واحدة أو اثنتان، وهي مخصّصة للأطفال وتشكّل نسخةً مصغّرةً ودقيقةً عن العربات التي تضمّ مقعدين للركّاب. يُقال إنّ البارون Maurice de Rothschild كان يستخدمها في طفولته للتنزّه في القرية أو الريف. تمتاز العربة بهيكلٍ أسود اللون وشاسي أحمر، وعجلات ذات إطارات حديديّة، بالإضافة إلى قطعٍ جلديّةٍ متميّزة (كالصندوق والمقاعد والمصدّات المنجّدة)، وُتظهر بشكل رائع تناغم الخبرات بين كلّ من صانع السرج وأطقم الفروسيّة وصانع العربات.

This photograph is one of the images in a Hermès catalogue from the 1920s. Female aviators were the new figures of female emancipation in this heroic era of conquering the skies, making headline news in the gazettes. The metal Pegasus and their new riders expressed the quest for speed and space pursued by an entire generation that was passionate about everything new and the conquest of the elements. The Hermès élégantes joined this wave of enthusiasm, appearing kitted out in the intrepid modern adventurer’s outfit, equipped with the travel bag that the saddler had just created to liberate the hands of both motorists and aviators.

ترد هذه الصّورة ضمن صور كاتالوغ Hermès  الصادر في عشرينيّات القرن الماضي. شكّلت قائدات الطائرات رمزًا جديدًا لتحرّر المرأة في تلك الفترة التي تميّزت بخوض غمار الرحلات الجويّة لتتصدّر عناوين المجلات والصحف. وتعبّر صورة الطائرة وركّابها الجدد عن الرغبة بالطيران وبتحقيق السرعة لجيلٍ شغوف بالمغامرات الجديدة وتحدّي عناصر الطبيعة. وانضمّت سيدات Hermès الأنيقات إلى موجة الحماسة السائدة، فارتدينَ الزيّ الخاص بالمغامرين المعاصرين، وحملنَ حقيبة السفر التي ابتدعَتها الدار حديثًا ليتسنّى للسائقين والطيارين على حدّ سواء استخدام اليدين بمرونة وأريحيّة.

These colossal boots seem to have been constructed for some mythological giant. A true paradox, they tell the story of horse-drawn carriage journeys of a bygone era, but they are in fact firmly immobile accessories, designed to protect the legs of stagecoach drivers. They now stand tall like proud leather sculptures, evoking the glory of dream journeys in fairy-tales.

The ***Jeu des omnibus et dames blanches*** silk scarf is inspired by an etched-line watercolour featured in the Émile Hermès Collection, which formed the playing board of a game that was popular around 1830. It evokes the first public transport in Paris that commenced in the 1820s, its horse-drawn vehicles encircling the central medallion of the scarf. Created in 1937, it was the first scarf to be designed by the house, and it paved the way for uninterrupted dynamic creativity.

يحاكي وشاح الحرير *Jeu des omnibus et dames blanches* لوحةً محفورةً ومزدانةً بالألوان المائيّة في مجموعة Émile Hermès استُخدمت رقعةً للعبةٍ واسعة الانتشار قرابة العام 1830. ويُظهر الوشاح أوّل وسيلة نقل عامّة في باريس انطلقت في عشرينيات القرن التاسع عشر. تحيط عربات الخيل بالمشهد المركزيّ الظاهر في الوشاح، وهو أوّل وشاحٍ تصمّمه الدار، وتمّ ابتداعه في العام 1937 ليكون باكورة مسيرةٍ طويلةٍ من الإبداع المتجدّد.

In 1934, when this portrait appeared in ***L’Officiel de la couture et de la mode de Paris magazine***, Arletty was at the pinnacle of her glory as an actress and Parisian icon. She is a dreamer who seems captivated by the imaginary journeys that could be undertaken on this astonishing foldaway silk map of the world created by Hermès. The magazine caption informs us that she is wearing a “sports coat in natural beige goatskin; a navy and yellow hand-woven wool scarf; navy and white hand-knitted hat and gloves: Hermès Creations”. Presented against an abstract backdrop of dynamic lines, both the outfit and the object express an undeniably modern, transcontinental and elegant notion of travel.

 فرضت العادات الجديدة في التنقّل في المدن عودة الدرّاجة إلى مكانتها المحوريّة بين وسائل النقل. وتوفّر درّاجة Le Flâneur d’Hermès ما يسعى إليه مستخدمو الدرّاجات حاليًا من تطوّر تكنولوجيّ وأناقة فائقة. ولا شكّ في أنّ هيكل الدراجة يعبّر ببساطته عن مميّزاتها الكثيرة رغم حجمها الصغير ووزنها الذي يُعدّ من الأخفّ بين مثيلاتها في القرن الحادي والعشرين. وقد صُمّمت مختلف تفاصيل الدراجة لتتيح التجوّل في المدن والطرقات السريعة بما يراعي متطلّبات السلامة، والسرعة، وسهولة التعامل.

In 2010, for the launch of the new ***Voyage d’Hermès*** fragrance, the house enlisted the collaboration of Moebius, the famous French comic-strip artist. The imaginative world of this science fiction and fantasy artist is exquisitely expressed in an album that immerses readers in a traveller’s universe of pure visual poetry. The comic-strip character traverses a series of dreamlike landscapes throughout this sensational press kit, which opens instantly into a new world.

في العام 2010، وقبيل إطلاق عطر Voyage d’Hermès الجديد، استعانت الدار بفنّان الشرائط المصوّرة الفرنسي الشهير Moebius. ويظهر عالم الخيال الذي يبتدعه فنّان الفنتازيا والخيال العلمي بأناقة فائقة في ألبوم ينقل القرّاء إلى عالم السّفر عبر قصائد بصريّة رائعة. تمرّ الشخصيّة الرئيسيّة في الشريط المصوّر في أماكن أشبه بأرض الأحلام ضمن المواد الصحفيّة المميزّة التي تفتح الباب واسعًا أمام عالمٍ جديد.

This surprising photograph shows Charles-Émile Hermès, son of Thierry Hermès, the founder of the house, riding the spectacular painted wooden rocking horse that belonged to the family of Julie Hollande, his son Émile’s wife. Associated with the world of childhood, this toy appears strange here, ridden by this mature man whose debonair bearing belies a very bourgeois appearance. The famous saddler and harness-maker of Faubourg Saint-Honoré here appears very different from his image as a respectable businessman, but he is careful to remain faithful to the equestrian world, his kingdom!

في هذه الصورة المفاجئة، نرى Charles-Émile Hermès وهو ابن Thierry Hermès مؤسّس الدار يمتطي حصانًا خشبيًا هزازًا ومطليًا يعود لعائلة Julie Hollande زوجة ابنه Émile. ترتبط هذه اللعبة ارتباطًا وثيقًا بعالم الطفولة، فيبدو غريبًا أن يمتطيها رجل بالغ بطلّته الأنيقة ومظهره البورجوازي. ويظهر صانع السرج الشهير في شارع Faubourg Saint-Honoré بصورةٍ مختلفةٍ تمامًا عن جدّية رجل الأعمال الوقور والرصين، إلا أنّه يظلّ حريصًا على انتمائه إلى عالم الفروسيّة الذي يشكّل محور مملكته الخاصّة.

This large watercolour painting embellished with gold was a design for the coronation of King Louis XVIII of France. Every detail asserts the splendour of a royal ceremony, from the horses’ sumptuous harnesses to the design of the carriage and its decoration. But Louis XVIII renounced the pomp of coronation and this plan was abandoned. Inscribed into the mythology of royal coaches, in 1856 this carriage was used for the baptism of the imperial prince, the only son of Napoleon III and Eugénie de Montijo.

صُمّمت هذه اللوحة الكبيرة المزدانة بالألوان المائيّة والذهب احتفالاً بتتويج ملك فرنسا لويس الثامن عشر. ويبيّن كلّ تفصيلٍ في اللوحة  فخامة الاحتفالات الملكيّة وروعتها- من أناقة طقم الخيول إلى تصميم العربة وزينتها. غير أن الملك لويس الثامن عشر اختار الابتعاد عن مظاهر التّرف والفخامة في حفل تتويجه، فلم تُطبّق هذه المراسم. وقد فرضت العربة نفسها أسطورةً بين العربات الملكيّة، فاستُخدمت في عمادة الأمير الإمبراطور، الابن الوحيد لنابوليون الثالث و Eugénie de Montijo.

Equipped with numerous accessories, this officer’s mess kit is astonishing for its opulence and its particularly ingenious set of nested storage compartments. Silverware is stowed alongside porcelain, glass, mahogany and enamelled iron pieces, all contained in a solid oak chest for a sophisticated and refined game of construction! Everything here points to a high-ranking officer who would expect impeccable service, even in the field. Such an elegant and practical object would have proved irresistible to Émile Hermès who undoubtedly imagined variants of it for the picnic trunks that provided a new approach to enjoying the pleasures of nature.

This ***Inversable*** was an accessory for the elegant life on board the yachts and ocean liners of the 1930s. It offers the remarkable advantage of being able to be turned in all directions without the glasses leaving the vertical position, whether empty or full. Indeed, this structure formed of eight rings mounted on an axis in a pivoting frame maintains the glasses in a vertical position no matter how rough the seas. The bold simplicity of this object combined with its functionality gives it the status of a mobile sculpture and offers a level of comfort suited to the new pleasures of ocean living.

شكّلت مجموعة *Inversable* رمزًا للترف على متن اليخوت والسفن الفاخرة في ثلاثينيّات القرن الماضي. ويمكن تحريك الغرض في جميع الاتّجاهات من دون أن تتغيّر وضعيّة الأكواب العاموديّة سواء كانت فارغة أو ممتلئة. يتألف المجسّم من ثماني حلقات ترتكز على محور دوّار، ويحافظ على وضعيّة الأكواب العاموديّة مهما كانت البحر هائجًا أو عاتي الأمواج. وبفضل بساطة هذا الغرض وفعاليته، بات أشبه بمنحوتة متحرّكة تضفي الراحة وتتيح الاستمتاع بروعة الرحلات البحريّة.

For the comfort of its travelling customers in the interwar period, Hermès offered a variety of models of trunks for cars, trains and ocean liners. Their interiors were compartmentalised to suit the customers’ convenience. The layout of the cabin trunk was specifically designed to accompany long transatlantic journeys. In around 1920, Hermès designed a trunk for Ettore Bugatti. With his sumptuous and high-powered sports cars, this automobile manufacturer left his mark on the golden era of French motor cars in the interwar years. 
Seventy years later in 1988, at the ***Cuir Toujours*** [Always Leather] exhibition at the Cité des Sciences de la Villette in Paris, Hermès presented the ***MC 2000*** cabin trunk. This exceptional piece of luggage revisits the 1920s model, enriching it with cutting-edge technology and combining carbon fibre with leather. As such, this piece combines highly contemporary usage (computer, fax, camera, television...) with timeless well-being (wardrobe, cigar cellar, toiletries, shoe compartment...).

قدّمت Hermès مجموعةً من الصناديق الخاصّة للسيارات والقطارات والسفن لراحة عملائها المسافرين في فترة ما بين الحربين. وقد قُسّمت الأجزاء الداخليّة إلى خانات لضمان راحة المستخدمين،  فجاء تصميم الصندوق مناسبًا للرحلات الطويلة العابرة للمحيط الأطلسي. وفي العام 1920 تقريباً، صمّمت Hermès صندوقًا لـ Ettore Bugatti الذي تميّز بسياراته الرياضية القوية، وترك بصمةً لا تُمحى في العصر الذهبي للسيارات الفرنسيّة خلال فترة ما بين الحربين. 
وفي العام 1988، أي بعد مضيّ سبعين عامًا تقريباً، قدّمت Hermès صندوق *MC 2000* ضمن معرض *Cuir Toujours*  في Cité des Sciences de la Villette في باريس. تستعيد هذه القطعة الاستثنائيّة روحيّة نموذج الخزانة المصنوعة في عشرينيّات القرن الماضي، وتضفي عليها طابعًا تكنولوجيًا معاصرًا وتمزج بين ألياف الكربون والجلد. وهكذا، يمكن استخدام القطعة للمقتنيات الحديثة مثل الكمبيوتر، والفاكس، والكاميرا، والتلفزيون كما للأغراض العابرة للزمن والخاصّة بالرفاه الشخصي مثل الملابس، والسيغار، ومستحضرات الزينة، والأحذية.

At Hermès, folding furniture is a reference to elegance and efficiency. Revisiting mobile pieces, the Pippa line was created by Rena Dumas and Peter Coles. The writing desk, designed in 1986, is a timeless icon, regularly revisited in wood species that blend simplicity with functionality. “The folding item is a fascinating concept,ʺ explains Rena Dumas. “When opened up, it is useful, fulfilling its potential. Once closed, it is put away and forgotten about.”

This stylish design for a folding desk takes its inspiration from the campaign desks of army officers. It combines a reference to military elegance with its era’s desire for a new mood. This small nomadic piece of furniture combines the sensuality of leather in its integrated storage compartments with the beauty of wood and the modernity of aluminium.

استُقي التصميم الفريد لهذه الطاولة القابلة للطيّ من مكاتب ضباط الجيش أثناء الحملات العسكريّة، ويجمع بين الأناقة العسكريّة وروح التجديد التي طبعت تلك الحقبة. تعبّر قطعة الأثاث الصغيرة والمتحرّكة عن التناغم بين رقّة الجلد في الخانات المخصّصة للتخزين،  وجمال الخشب وروح الحداثة التي يضفيها الألومينيوم.

Canes are objects that Émile Hermès collected in countless variations, with a penchant for “secret” or “gadget” models. This model allows the walker to carry the tools required for a picnic. Its handle has a trompe l’œil effect, concealing a set of cutlery. By simply fitting them together with an ingenious system, the knife and fork slide effortlessly into the barrel. The wooden outer plate imitating a thorn conceals from view the ingenuity of an object of apparent formal simplicity.

كان Émile Hermès يهوى جمع عصي المشي بمختلف أشكالها ومواصفاتها، غير أنّه  كان مولعًا بشكل خاص بالنماذج التي تخبّئ في ثناياها "أجزاءً سرّية"  أو "غير متوقّعة". وتتيح هذه القطعة للمستخدم حمل أدوات المائدة خلال النزهة في الطبيعة. تتميّز القبضة بجزء يشكّل خدعةً بصريّة إذ يحجب طقم أدوات المائدة، ويمكن إدخال السكّين والشوكة بكلّ سهولة في ساق العصا عن طريق نظام مبدع. وتحجب الصفيحة الخارجيّة التي تتخذ شكل الأشواك ما يحمله هذا الغرض من إبداع على الرغم من بساطته الظاهريّة.
